What is CBL?
Community-based learning (CBL) is an educational approach that integrates academic coursework with meaningful community engagement. Within a credit-bearing course, students address the needs of a community partner, fostering a deeper understanding of course material and cultivating civic responsibility. This reciprocal process benefits both students through experiential learning and the community by addressing identified needs.
What is CFTC?
Chemistry for the Community is a network dedicated to sharing CBL project ideas, best practices, and curriculum supports. CFTC also brings together the community of CBL in Chemistry practitioners for scholarship, training, and informal dialogue, and is a resources for those interested in teaching chemistry with CBL.
How do I share my CBL materials?
We’d love for you to share your own projects and curriculum materials on this site – thank you for considering! For now, please contact Emily Lesher (elesher@sjcme.edu) and Yi Jin Gorske (ygorske@sjcme.edu) for instructions and to initiate our peer review process.
What opportunities for in-person training are available?
CFTC workshops were held at Saint Joseph’s College in 2023 and at the Biennial Conference on Chemical Education in Lexington, Kentucky in 2024. At the moment there are not any workshops scheduled but keep your eyes open for a potential opportunity at the next BCCE!
